10 non-chef celebrities who love to cook

Chefs made their way into celebrity land a while ago. But how many celebrities that weren’t trained as professional cooks are actually whizzes in the kitchen? Here are several that come to mind.

1. Julia Roberts

Actress Julia Roberts is confident about her cooking skills. “I’m quite a good cook,” she told E! News. “I’m like a closet home ec teacher…I can really cook anything.”

Roberts has said she often cooks fish for herself and her kids. And speaking of her three children, “They think that I’m a good cook,” Roberts told People. “They actually told me that I should open a restaurant.”

She also relishes cooking for the holidays, particularly shredded Brussel sprouts. Roberts hasn’t published a cookbook, but we did find recipes attributed to her for peach crisp and banana hemp muffins. Or you can make the same summer salad the actress supposedly eats.

2. Snoop Dogg

It was only a matter of time. First Snoop Dogg started hanging out with Martha Stewart. Then the pair started hosting “Martha and Snoop’s Potluck Dinner Party” on VH1. Now Snoop Dogg is coming out with his own cookbook. “From Crook to Cook” features lobster thermidor cooked up Snoop style. And it also features plenty of less high-brow recipes for things like munchies. But no cannabis treats.

In the meantime, while you wait for its Oct. 23 release, you can still try out Snoop’s already published recipes for the Laid Back cocktail and Baked While You Baked pork ribs

3. Chrissy Teigen

Chrissy Teigen started off as a supermodel. Then her love of cooking filtered into her professional life too. At this point, she’s created recipes for a limited Blue Apron release and also just launched her own home and cooking line at Target named “Cravings,” after the two cookbooks she’s released.

Teigen describes cooking as “a time of peace” for herself. So maybe peace out to her tuna melt sandwich or the fried chicken wings that are a favorite of her husband, John Legend.

4. Jesse Tyler Ferguson

Actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson has started a food blog with professional chef Julie Tanous, and they have eventual plans for a cookbook. Ferguson, who is also a restaurant investor, says that if he wasn’t acting, he’d go to culinary school.

You can try your hand at a long list of recipes he’s co-created with Tanous over on their site. His hatch green chile skillet dish looks delish.

5. Alicia Silverstone

Alicia Silverstone is not “Clueless” about cooking. The vegan actress has her own mini lifestyle and cooking empire called “The Kind Life” and an entirely vegan cookbook called “The Kind Diet.”

Silverstone told Food & Wine that for those interested in switching to a vegan diet, good transitional foods are ones “that scratch all the big itches — meaty, fatty, cheesy, chocolaty — without the junky preservatives and flavorings that packaged food has.”

To that end, try her recipes for loaded southwest sweet potatoes or chocolate peanut butter cups.

6. Eva Longoria

Hollywood actress Eva Longoria grew up cooking with her mother. She also worked for eight years at Wendy’s, eventually becoming a manager. Since then, she’s also owned a stake in two restaurants that have since closed.

Longoria likes cooking for family and friends. And she has – yep, you guessed it – her own cookbook called “Eva’s Kitchen.” Her favorite recipe is a chicken tortilla soup she’s tweaked over the years.

7. Michael Bublé

Crooner Michael Bublé also loves to cook. In fact, he used to be a boat cook and fisherman in his late teens.

“I’m married to this beautiful Italian-Argentinian girl [the model Luisana Lopilato] and attend asados [South American barbecues]. Of course, now I’m making roll-it-out gnocchi with my mother-in-law. Great chorizo, great asado – I’ll freaking make everything. I just love to cook,” he told The Guardian.

Try out his favorite holiday cocktail, the Caesar (a sort of Bloody Mary with Clamato). Or his rosemary garlic chicken wings and asparagus risotto.

8. Amy Sedaris

Comedian and actress Amy Sedaris came out with two cook and craft books that people weren’t entirely sure they should take seriously. But she can legitimately cook. In fact, Sedaris used to sell her cheeseballs and cupcakes at personal appearances. She now has a cooking/lifestyle TV show on TrueTV called “At Home With Amy Sedaris” that skirts a fine line of mocking shows of a similar genre and offering actual cooking tips and recipes.

Sedaris is Greek, so it’s not a big surprise that she has some great Greek recipes. Try this one for Greek cookie twists. Many of her other recipes also have a retro vibe to them. This coffee cake recipe looks tasty and like something your grandmother would have on a recipe card.

9. Freddie Prinze Jr.

Freddie Prinze Jr. is perhaps best known for “She’s All That,” “Scooby Doo” and being the husband of Sarah Michelle Gellar. But you might not know he’s also a culinary whiz. Prinze Jr. came out with the cookbook “Back to the Kitchen” in 2016. And it got great reviews.

Turns out that before he was an actor, Prinze Jr. grew up learning to cook with his mother and almost went to culinary school. The part-Puerto Rican celebrity likes spicy food and hosting big dinner parties.

“I love cooking for people. Restaurants are great, but when we’re in our own living room, we can have Michael Jackson and Prince playing in the background,” he told Bon Appetit.

Try his recipes for Stalker Pasta or Jalapeno Salmon Burgers.

10. Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, comes from a cooking Italian family. Her father started his own restaurant in New York and also published a cookbook. And apparently, Lady Gaga has inherited the family’s cooking genes. Her Instagram account occasionally features photos of her culinary activities. Sure, sometimes it’s topless cooking. But other times it’s more poignant like in the post she shared about her bringing food to the family of her dear friend who passed away.
