Here’s the catch though: If you want to truly experience the best of the autumn train ride, you need to move fast. This is because the the Great Dome car is only available for about six weeks, starting in late September. What is the Great Dome car, you might ask?
It’s a genius train car which features windows along each sides as well as the ceiling, which means that riders get a panoramic view of their surroundings as the train chugs along. How cool is that?

So while Amtrak offers train rides through the gorgeous North American landscape on a regular basis, you can only make the trip in the Great Dome car for a limited time. This allows riders to make the most of nature’s incredible and breathtaking transformation into the fall season.
But it also means that the train car is first come, first served. So you have to move fast if you want to ride in this incredible car. And, if you do get lucky enough to get a spot, don’t keep it for the whole ride. Amtrak encourages riders to rotate in and out of the Dome Car. This allows all passengers the ability to enjoy this unique experience.

And here is some great news. The Great Dome car is so popular Amtrak is taking making its first ever trip to Maine. And will make four trips each day!
