Prom dresses are arguably more trouble than they’re worth. They’re very expensive, rarely comfortable, and (like a bridesmaid’s dress) when are you ever going to wear one again? Well, one teen blew all of these complaints out of the water… because she made her own dress. Did we mention she did it the night before prom?
The designer in question is 17-year-old Shami Oshun, from California. She wasn’t even intending to go to prom, but ended up buying a ticket last-minute because her best friend didn’t want to go alone.
Spoiler alert: Shami has been sewing since she was 8 years old. So going to prom offered her the chance to create something really special.
DIY Prom Dress? No Problem
“I was like, ‘Oh yay, prom! An excuse to make a really fancy dress,’” Shami told the Huffington Post.

The day before prom, Shami went to her local fabric store where she found some purple tulle. She loved it, bought it (for $15!) and went home to work.

She posted about the process on her Twitter account, telling the world that she was “attempting to make a dress the night before” prom, and chronicling her adventures along the way.
“I Felt Like I Was On ‘Project Runway’!”
Shami worked for two hours that night… until she stepped on a needle that punctured her foot so deeply, she had to have her dad help her remove it. That didn’t stop her, though, and she worked for three or four more hours the next morning, the actual day of prom.
Except the drama wasn’t finished.
“Once I got to the top of the dress, my machine broke, so I had to hand stitch the rest,” Shami said.
But, according to the Huffington Post, Shami was all about “the rush” of being on a deadline and “doing what I could.”
“I felt like I was on ‘Project Runway’!” Shami told HuffPost.
In the end, it was all worth it—she designed a gorgeous dress and totally brought the house down. The purple flowers at the bottom of the dress came from fabric she had used to design something else the previous year.
Structurally, it didn’t make it through the night—the flowers were too heavy for the tulle (which is just another reason that fashion design is engineering, and therefore a STEM field!) but she just snipped them off and left them at the coat check. They’ll be used in a future design.

For a Canadian teen named Gabi Dunn, attending prom with her boyfriend of four months was a great experience. Her dress, hair and makeup were flawless, and the couple posed for the traditional prom photo opp on the big night, both looking happy and stylish. The photos took on a different feel, though, when Dunn’s boyfriend broke up with her two days after the event.
Luckily, Dunn had an idea for preserving her prom photos without letting them become a constant reminder of a bad breakup. She used a little Photoshop magic to replace her ex-boyfriend with her ideal prom date.
“I didn’t want to waste my prom photos, so I just Photoshopped Ryan Reynolds in,” Dunn told Yahoo Style. “I kind of have a huge love for Ryan Reynolds. Who could be a better prom date than him?

Dunn posted the edited photos (which are hilarious) on Twitter, and that’s when things got interesting. Ryan Reynolds saw the pictures, and took the time to weigh in with a tip for taking this post-breakup Photoshopping to the next level.
We should photoshop me over his yearbook picture next. #DontMessWithGabi https://t.co/o0qFBXvSNi

Dunn’s boyfriend responded to Reynolds’ tweet reporting that he was no longer going to see Deadpool 2. Fair enough.
